Every Man is a Mountain

Army came to school, said
"What you wanna be when you get old?"
Matty spent some time letting it run through his mind
But he'll admit he still didn't know
What about joining the forces?
He felt there was a sense of nobility
In joining the good fight, being a good guy
Protecting your neighbour's liberty
Spread a little Western Civility

A soldier or a sailor
Every man is a mountain
Every man is a crater

Matty did join the army
Spent two tours in the desert sun
Did some things to an Iraqi woman
He'd never tell no one
Had a girl waiting for him
And when he got back they shared a room
But he was old at 23 and she was a teen at 21
And that went the way these things do
That went the way that these things sometimes do

The survivors and the gonnas
Every man is an angel
Every man is a monster

Matty spent some time in the veteran bar
When he wasn't trying to find a job
But his self medication and violent inclinations
Meant him & people didn't get along
There was a day-drinker named Dave
Served on the USS John S. McCain
Who'd talk and drink with Matty all through the night
They'd drink and put this messed up world to rights

A soldier and a sailor
Every man is a mountain
Every man is a crater

Matty said to Davey
"Man, remember when you was young?"
But Davey he don't answer no more
Since the cancer took his tongue
These days they've taken to burglary
They share Matty's meds and pass the bottle
Tonight they're gonna be high as the moon
And who cares about tomorrow?
I don't care about tomorrow

A soldier and a sailor
Every man is a mountain
Every man is a crater
